Tobias Ellwood spent six years in the Royal Green Jackets, serving in Ulster, Cyprus, Kuwait, Germany, Gibraltar and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He was elected as MP for Bournemouth East in 2005.

In July 2014 he became Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with special responsibility for the Middle East and Africa. In the June 2017 reshuffle he moved to the Ministry of Defence.
